"Silver Goddess"

I have never worked on such a restriction and creativity based performance artwork before! This project began with many brainstorming sessions on how to handle the embodiment of our assigned element fo the periodic table, "Silver". My partner and I decided to go with the concept that "Silver" would be a queen due to her economic background in ancient greek.

This was, of course, only the base concept for the entire piece. This character that I would be playing on the runway must be the epitome of strength and regality. Strength, because of the use of "Silver" within viking knit. Viking knit is a form of chainmail that was used specifically by Vikings in order to protect areas like the forearms. You can see implementation of this idea within the top where there is soda pop tabs woven together to form a imitation viking knit.

With the materials: silverware, chicken wire, tissue paper, glitter, aluminum foil, soda pop tabs, bubble wrap, napkins, party streamers, and a lot fo hot glue my partner and I created the personified version of "The Silver Goddess".

Wire Birkenstock

This was the most 'realistic' project that I completed in this course. I was happy with my choice of using a sandal instead of a tennis shoe, like many of my classmates. I felt that the Birkenstock held some defining characteristics that would translate well into wire (the buckles, sole, and foot impression).

I had also never low-heat soldered before this, so I did have to work with the material before I was able to create a more precise replica.

The requirements for this project was to make the most accurate version of the shoe that I chose completely made from wire.

360° Balsa Foam Sculpture

I found this sculpture to be very difficult for because of the abstract nature. This was created by shaving, carving, and sanding balsa foam and then covering the entire piece in white gesso in order to better see the overall form. I decided to use a repetition of a gridded carving in order to have a sense of stability within the piece.

All pieces were carved individually and then assembled after with gorilla glue. While gluing down the portions of this sculpture, I attempted to focus on positive and negative space and how these would impact the shadows.

Overall, I was happy with how this piece represented a new media and the abstract forms.

Ceramic Tile

This porcelain 6in x 6in piece was by far one of my favorites because of the freedom I had to experiment.  The process I took while creating this piece was choosing something from nature for this to derive from. I chose the positive and negative space that comes with a honey comb. I used the hexagonal shape as the overall form and used these pieces to make my 'tile' more three dimensional. I felt this was once of my more successful pieces of the semester. The usage of experimental mark making techniques that was reinforced by my instructor, I feel, really pushed the form.
