Guest Speaker: Kim Roberts

Kim Roberts is an elementary school teacher for the Menomonie School District. Kim Roberts discussed her preference towards first year students getting their masters degrees right away after graduation. Personally, I feel this is not the right decision for me. I think I plan to get my foot in the door at a district that I like and then move forward with with furthering my education after. Some other basic information that Kim offered up was, never buy Crayola brand erasable colored pencils or CraZArt brand materials. Another piece of information that I felt was interesting was one way to incorporate math in your art lessons in elementary schoolers is to teach basic measuring skills. Often times students do not

recognize the proper way to turn and use the ruler! I thought this was awesome because often I struggle incorporating math because it is not something I enjoy teaching. I would really like to look more into cross disciplinary lessons! I have worked on this in the past with Science, English, and History but I think now is the time for Math! Having this level of students work through some of the elements of art and design (unity, pattern, and emphasis) I thought was perfectly complex and interesting to keep the students hooked. I thought the project that she did with her students was a great start but I would love to dive deeper into what it means to create pattern. I ended up translating this project into a Jelly Chen Vases related project in which I teach the same skill sets but in a new way that forms to what I want my classroom to look like.
